Our first day in Florence had been lovely. We had seen the Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio and Il Porcelino. For our second day, we had bought afternoon tickets for the Uffizi, for it would be too hot in the city to be outside. For the morning, we decided to cross the Arno and walk towards Piazzale Michelangelo.

We crossed the Ponte Vecchio towards a part of the city where we hadn’t been before. The part that went uphill. We had planned on visiting Giardino Bardini, for the website stated it would be free on sundays.

It was hot, but the city is so beautiful that it really wasn’t a punishment to walk about. We even spotted the house of Galileo Galilei on our way upwards. I didn’t even know he had lived in Florence until we ran into his house! If we had known before, we certainly would have planned a trip to his museum, but alas. I guess we should go back to the city one day.

When we arrived at Giardino Bardini, the admission wasn’t free, contrasting what the website stated. The tickets weren’t that pricey, but we had limited time and also, recent pictures showed that the flowers in the garden weren’t in bloom at all, so we decided against it. Instead, we took a left and walked along the garden walls, towards the piazza Michelangelo.

It was a lovely walk, with beautiful trees surrounding us, lizards scurrying around and the mountains in the distance. This is what Toscane looks and feels like and even though it was blazing hot, it was absolutely beautiful.

The road went up and down and up again, onto a steep staircase that would take us up to the Piazza. The walk really was worth it because the view was amazing. We found yet another David statue, which was the second one we encountered.

By this time, we felt that we deserved lunch and a very big cold drink. So we sat down at La Loggia del Piazzale Michelangelo where I had a yummy carpaccio and boyfriend had some delicious gelato. We had the best view over the city, and of course David’s butt. I would really recommend stopping here for a drink, for the terrace is cool and the view is absolutely amazing.

The Piazzale Michelangelo was designed by Giuseppe Poggi in 1869 and is nowadays one of Florence’s biggest highlights, as it gives a gorgeous view over the city and the other attractions the city has to offer, such as the duomo, the Ponte Vecchio and the Uffizi gallery. It’s certainly a must visit!
