Falling in Love with Florence

Florence hasn’t even been on my bucketlist for too long. The city came to me in a dream and somehow I felt I needed to go there as soon as I could. So when we planned a trip for the summer and decided we wanted to go to Rome, we obviously had to go to Florence as well.

And wow. The city is probably the prettiest I’ve ever been to. I dare say it’s prettier than Paris or Rome. Whereas Rome breathed ancient history, Florence felt young and vibrant with it’s colorful houses, lovely food, expensive stores and the most gorgeous architecture I have ever seen.

In the past three days we had seen a lot of the highlights that Rome has to offer. Originally, on our fourth and last day in the city, we wanted to do a daytrip to visit another place for a bit. But by this time we had already walked so far, our feet blistered and our bodies tired, that we decided to spend a relaxing day in the most beautiful gardens of Rome instead.

We spent a good part of the day inside the Vatican museums and then went back to our hotel for a little siësta. After resting for a bit, we set out again for a couple of another highlights, like the Pantheon and the Largo di Torre Argentina before finding a place to have dinner.

When months passed and it didn’t seem like the corona virus would be over soon, it became more and more clear that we had to postpone our trip to Iceland. Instead, we booked a trip to Italy. I had never been to Rome and now seemed the perfect time, for we knew not a lot of tourists would be able to visit the city. Only travelers from inside the EU were allowed to visit Italy and we knew that a lot of those people weren’t ready to travel yet. So we booked our trip and as it turned out: we were right. Rome was empty.

It was wonderful to have the place to ourselves and we know that not a lot of people will see Rome the way we saw it. I feel extremely lucky to be able to travel right now and to see one of the most busy cities in Europe like this. Time for a picture gallery of the most famous tourist attractions that Rome has to offer, without the tourists!

Ciao! So far, Rome had been wonderful already. We had seen the Trevi fountain, Colosseum and the Foro Romano, ate the best pasta and lots of gelato. On our third day, we would cross off another two highlights, namely the Vatican museums with the Sistine Chapel and the Pantheon.

After visiting the Foro Romano for a couple of hours and then spending some time at the Colosseum, Boyfriend and I were ready for siësta. Never mind that it was already half past four, we needed a break. So we spent some time in our hotel. Sleeping, reading, resting. Until my stomach was growling so much we had to get out for, what would be, the best dinner we would have in our week in Italy…

The oldest parts of the Eternal City: Guide to Foro Romano

When we suddenly changed our plans and went to Rome for the summer instead of Iceland, we made a (small) list of the absolute (and obvious) highlights of the city that we didn’t want to miss. On our first day in the city, we could cross off the Trevi Fountain and for our second day, we wanted to explore the oldest parts of the city, ticking off the boxes to the Colosseum and the Foro Romano. Again, the city was as quiet as it had ever been before and we had hours to explore the ancient ruins by ourselves.

First time in Rome: Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and the tiber

They say all roads lead to Rome, but it took me a while to get here. Rome has been on my list for quite a while, but boyfriend had been there twice before so he had other places he wanted to visit first. We had actually planned an amazing trip to Iceland this summer, driving through the country, sleeping in 8 different hotels, seeing the most majestic elements of the country. But then corona struck and we had to find an alternative. I had the idea to visit Rome and some other cities in Italy. Why? Because only European tourists are allowed to travel at the moment, and without tourists from all over the world, I figured Rome would not be as crowded as it usually is.

And I am so happy to be able to say that I was right! It was uncanny how few tourists were wandering the streets. Unseen! Of course I hope it will be safe for other borders to open up soon, but it was really special to have Rome all to ourselves.
